Technology: New version of industry's most powerful simulation and content authoring tool features greater deployment options, deeper standards compliance
BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 30, 2003--Click2learn, Inc. (Nasdaq:CLKS), leader in enterprise productivity solutions, today announced the immediate availability of ToolBook 8.6, the newest version of its award-winning authoring solution for performance-based simulations and content.
Reinforcing Click2learn's continuing commitment to this popular product, this latest version of ToolBook includes powerful new features developed to meet evolving learning industry demands and to respond to feedback from many of ToolBook's 13,000-plus customers worldwide. ToolBook helps organizations create the compelling content and simulations that are a critical success factor in an organizational learning initiative. Using its powerful features, companies can create professional, standards-based simulations, tutorials, courseware and other interactive learning content without in-depth programming skills. Based on AICC and SCORM standards, ToolBook also makes it easy to launch and track ToolBook content through a standards-compliant learning management system (LMS). "In developing ToolBook 8.6, we tapped into the large, loyal global ToolBook community to learn what new features they needed to be able to continue meeting their organization's dynamic simulation and content demands," said Kevin Oakes, chairman and CEO of Click2learn. "We are proud of our long, collaborative history with many of these customers and delighted to know our technology has played an integral role in helping them meet their business goals thus far. In fact, in a recent survey, the vast majority of those responding rated their satisfaction with ToolBook as good to excellent. As we evolve the product further, we will continue to turn to our customers to ensure that ToolBook meets the broadest range of learning simulation and content needs." To make ToolBook's simulation and content capabilities even more flexible and easier to use, Version 8.6 has incorporated significant feature enhancements and support for a number of useful third-party applications. Among these are: -- Support for Sun's Java Virtual Machine (JVM) technology, providing greater content delivery options -- A broader range of deployment options, allowing LMS-launched ToolBook content that can reside on another server or content repository -- Improved Windows Media Player Version 9 support -- Enhanced interoperability with the Aspen Enterprise Productivity Suite(TM), allowing for more seamless delivery and tracking of simulations and content. One of the industry's very first standards-compliant technologies, ToolBook now demonstrates even greater support for Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act, which requires that Federal agencies' electronic and information technology be accessible to people with disabilities. In addition to other Section 508 enabling functionalities, ToolBook 8.6 adds enhanced support for Freedom Scientific's JAWs screen reader for assisted learning, which provides speech technology to allow blind or low-vision users to access popular software applications and the Internet. Automotive manufacturing giant, TRW Automotive, is expanding its use of ToolBook to reach more than 63,000 employees at 185 locations around the globe with a full range of courseware on topics including health, safety and environment, Six Sigma, legal and ethical, regulatory requirements, and new-hire and contractor orientation, which are custom-tailored to job function and location. "ToolBook gives us a degree of flexibility that we haven't seen in other e-learning authoring tools on the market and makes it easier for us to create and deliver effective, quality learning content in virtually any way we choose," said Mark Dumar, IS Project Manager at TRW Automotive. "We've had a great experience working with Click2learn. The company was able to meet a number of specific, out-of-the-ordinary needs and help us maximize our use of ToolBook to deliver critical information to our employees." Platte Canyon Multimedia Software Corporation, a Click2learn reselling partner in the U.S., chose to make ToolBook part of its software offering because of its powerful, in-depth functionalities and its flexibility and ease-of-use for both beginners and advanced users. "ToolBook is the best tool on the market for creating simulations. It gives users unlimited power to create complex, professional simulations and content without having to have advanced programming skills," said Chris Bell, Platte Canyon co-founder and COO. "As a reseller, we have found that our customers love ToolBook because creating training with it is so quick and it offers such a high return on investment. I love teaching ToolBook training classes to beginners because within the first few hours the students become charged with energy when they see the great things they can do with ToolBook." Going forward, Click2learn will continue to add features to ToolBook to further enhance its performance-based simulation and interactive content functionalities, including more rapid creation capabilities, improved tracking and scoring, and 32-bit support, among others.
