In late 1971, several “entirely forgettable” messages were sent between two machines (today we would call them computers, but the word machines more accurately reflects their size at that time) located only a few feet from each other.1 Like the first telephones and televisions, e-mail would soon grow in popularity, astonishing even the most optimistic proponents of the new technology. The rudimentary origins of a new medium often belie the substantial shift in perspective and practice afforded to subsequent researchers and users.
RALEIGH - Digital Imaging, Interactive 3-D Objects, Nomadic Moodle, Social Networking and Flinged Migration may not be terms the average instructor uses, but are the tools of the trade for those who teach on the Internet or with other distance learning methods. Those distance learning instructors, from every education level, will gather in New Bern to learn new technologies from state and national distance learning experts.
"The greatest challenge we face with ed tech and with evolving education is human," said Keith Krueger, chief executive officer of the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), at the group's 13th annual K-12 School Networking Conference in Arlington, Va., earlier this month.
eLearning has re-emerged as a solution for delivering significant value to corporations, educational institutions and governments. Attendees of the conference will learn how to capitalize on existing and future courseware and how to monetize knowledge investments to reach larger audiences. The conference will also provide techniques to take advantage of distance learning through online and mobile platforms.
A consortium of vendors is hosting a conference for educators on the use of 3D simulation-based learning. The Interactive Digital Center (IDC) Consortium is a collaboration formed by EON Reality, Nvidia, HP, Christie Digital, and Microsoft to promote the advancement of interactive 3D (i3D) visualization solutions for simulation-based learning and workforce development. The event will be held in Florence, SC April 9 through 11.
Technology leaders, artists and academics will discuss the hot topics of virtual worlds and Second Life at a conference scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16-17, in Annenberg Auditorium.
A week after one of the most successful mobile learning conferences, Handheld Learning 2006, held in London in association with the DfES, the UK was fully represented at the 5th World Conference on Mobile Learning hosted by Athabasca University and held in Banff, Alberta, Canada where delegates from over 20 countries came together to explore and share the potential and practice of learning with mobile and portable technologies.
UNESCO is one of the co-sponsors of the 22nd World Conference on Distance Education, that the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) and the Brazilian Distance Education Association organize from 3 to 6 September 2006 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
