The British Museum is delighted to announce it will be joining Fathom, the innovative knowledge and education site at http://www.fathom.com. British Museum curators and education specialists have worked closely with Fathom to provide online seminars, lectures and features which will make available the Museum's extraordinary range of expertise to an ever-wider global audience.

The Museum joins thirteen other renowned universities, museums, libraries, and cultural institutions from both sides of the Atlantic as part of the Fathom consortium. These include Columbia University, the London School of Economics and Political Science, Cambridge University Press, The British Library, The New York Public Library, The University of Chicago, The University of Michigan, American Film Institute, RAND, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Victoria and Albert Museum, Science Museum, and the Natural History Museum.

The initial range of courses and online-learning opportunities developed by the Museum with Fathom include a free e-seminar on "Agatha Christie and Archaeology" to tie in with the major exhibition currently on show at the Museum, as well as authoritative features on Cleopatra, contemporary Japanese festivals and, to coincide with the launch of the Euro, the history of European currencies. Additional in-depth content is being developed for future presentation.

"The British Museum has an established online presence through its own websites including COMPASS object tours and the Ancient Civilizations educational sites which support the National Curriculum. The partnership with Fathom will enable a new type of lifelong learning, providing users with the opportunity to explore more widely across and between institutions and disciplines. And, in this, Fathom is an exciting vision for the future," said Dr Carol Homden, Director of Marketing and Public Affairs, The British Museum.

"We are pleased to welcome The British Museum to the Fathom consortium," said Fathom President and CEO, Ann Kirschner. "So close to the 250th anniversary of the Museum, we are struck by the role it has played in promoting an understanding of human history and culture to visitors from around the world. Together, we can use the digital medium toproject aspects of the collections distinct from those that the Museum has rendered so captivating in its physical space, introducing new and loyal visitors alike to entirely unique educational experiences online."

Oregon State University's distance degree program in natural resources has been recognized as one of the nation's finest by the American Distance Education Consortium.

While more than 100 universities nominated distance degree programs for recognition in ADEC's annual awards competition, OSU was one of only four programs to receive the consortium's Honorable Mention for Excellence in Distance Education award.

ADEC is an international consortium of state universities and land grant institutions that provide distance education programs and services via the latest information technologies.

OSU's natural resources degree is offered through the university's colleges of Agricultural Sciences, Forestry, Liberal Arts, and Science. It has both an on-campus component and a distance component that encompasses the final two years of coursework. The OSU Department of Rangeland Resources oversees the distance component of the program.

An interdisciplinary team that has been instrumental in developing the distance natural resources program includes faculty from the Department of Rangeland Resources, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, College of Agricultural Sciences and Department o f Agricultural and Resource Economics.

"This award is tremendous recognition for the great work of this team and OSU, and the many other faculty and staff at the university who are providing the highest quality educational programs to non-traditional and non-resident students through OSU's ex tended campus," said Mark Merickel, associate dean for distance and continuing education.

As of Jan. 1, 2002, 55 students were seeking a bachelors of science degree in this program, and an additional 30 were taking courses either from OSU or other institutions in preparation for entry into the program. The students are located in 19 states an d four countries in addition to the United States.

In all, OSU provides more than 45 courses from five colleges and 21 academic departments that support natural resource offerings. These courses utilize a range of delivery techniques including a mix of video- and web-based offerings, individualized direc ted learning and interactive live television.

The natural resources degree program has been offered through distance education since 1999. Most upper division course work is delivered via the web, videotapes, and one-on-one with an instructor through individualized directed learning. Lower division course work must be taken at community colleges or other institutions, which offer all of the necessary lower division courses via distance delivery. OSU will be honored April 14-16 at The Ohio State University during ADEC's annual meeting.

  • 'Fundamentals of Compensation' Technical skills and practical knowledge to understand total compensation, align an organization's compensation program with its strategic goals, conduct a compensation analysis by examining and integrating internal and external data, and much more.
Both courses are offered by eCornell (at http://www.ecornell.com). Susan W. Brecher, Director of Curriculum and Training Design at Cornell University's Metropolitan District Office of The New York State School of ILR serves as eCornell's academic leader of the Human Resources Studies Certificate Program. She has developed and led programs for the School of ILR for the past 17 years, and is a nationally recognized expert in the area of employment practices and alternative dispute resolution. She also has a degree in law.

The two new courses join the ongoing eCornell courses: 'Human Resources and the Law' and 'Fundamentals of Employee Benefits.' These four, in conjunction with two courses coming later this spring, allow participants to earn a Cornell Certificate in Human Resources Studies. Each of these courses reflects the content and expertise of the instructors who teach in the ILR Management Programs.

"The question we're most often asked by prospective students, many of whom have never experienced on-line learning, is: 'Is going online for courses really the same as attending a class?'" says Brecher. "Yes and no. Yes, our online courses are just as relevant and vital to understanding the complex issues that face today's Human Resources practitioners as our classroom courses are, but in key ways the eCornell experience is different," says Brecher. "The beauty of an online course of study is that students can participate when and where it's most convenient for them. At eCornell, the course material encourages all students to participate by interacting with instructors and with each other. We find that some students are more comfortable participating intensely online than they are in a face-to-face classroom."

Learning should never be a passive experience. eCornell has enriched the lesson plans and limited the class size to 20 to ensure that distance learning students get the most from their time online. The innovative eCornell format seeks out new viewpoints and deepens the level of online exploration and learning.

eCornell courses follow the same curriculum as the School of ILR's classroom courses, and Human Relations professionals may combine online and classroom courses in order to earn a Certificate in Human Relations from Cornell University. Cornell's ILR School offers classroom courses at locations throughout New York State.

eCornell is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cornell University. eCornell courses offer executives, managers and professionals the highest quality educational experience using the latest Internet collaborative technology. Courses begin the first week of every month, and each course takes approximately four weeks to complete. For more information or to register, visit at http://www.ecornell.com or call 1-866-ecornell.
