On one of the mailing lists I read someone asked the question, “Does anyone have a recommendation for an affordable company offering the technology to conduct webinars on a limited basis?” So I took this opportunity to answer since I knew there were more FREE tools available than what most responses included.

  1. Yugma is a great service offered for FREE with additional Pro plans that are very affordable. The free web conferencing account allows you to invite up to 20 attendees in addition you get a free 15-day trial of Yugma Pro. If you decide to go with the pro account they are very affordable, starting at about $99.50 a year.
  2. Vyew Vyew provides professional quality web conferencing and Collaboration to Educators, Tutors, and Students around the world, for free. Until Vyew, most schools and after school programs could not afford this type of technology.
  3. WizIQ great easy-to-use tool FREE web based tool for teaching and business conferencing.
  4. DimDim is a simple, free service that lets everyone everywhere communicate using rich media in real time.
  5. ooVoo is easy to use: easy to download, easy to install, and best of all: it’s FREE! You can have up to six people in one video conference.

Twitter: An Introduction to Getting Started

Twitter is a micro-blogging tool designed around community. Twitter gives you the opportunity to meet and network with people with similar interests around the world or from across town.

Some of the most valuable connections I’ve made have been local but if your topic is narrow and deep then finding locals may not be as easy but you still have an opportunity to network with people from around the country, making valuable professional connections.

You may even find some people you admire and want as mentors, Twitter is a good way to connect, on a personal level, with someone you may not otherwise have an opportunity to meet. I would say Twitter, and the internet on a larger scale, helps breaks down the perceived hierarchy of the traditional social structure, so start following, connecting, and learning.

Twitter Icon: Branding Your Conversation

We all know it is important to make a good ‘first’ impression in person as well as online. And your ‘Twitter’ icon plays an important part in making a good impression online. Choosing a personal icon depends on how you are using Twitter or any other social networking tool. For example, I’m ‘branding’ myself, I want to provide a consistent image across all my social networking environments so I’ve chosen a small recent picture of myself. I prefer to use a personal image on social networking because I’m connecting with someone online. But if you have decided to remain anonymous with respect to your image then use something else that reflects your personality. It does come through in your conversation stream.

Visual image is as important online as it is in person so make sure you get it right. Remember this is a way other users track your online conversation stream so when you change the image your visibility changes and your tweets often get lost in the reader’s mind because they are familiar with seeing your old image associated with your conversation.

Customizing Twitter to Reflect Your Personal Brand

Reflecting your personality or brand is easy using Twitter. There are many economical and free ways to introduce yourself online. Most social networking tools, including Twitter, provides you with a page to introduce yourself to potential friends, colleagues, customers, and employers.

On Twitter you can provide contact information, company branding, information about your services. An example can be seen here: http://www.twitter.com/ithinkmedia. And you can download Twitter backgrounds at http://www.TwitterPassion.com. You can also get a background personalized for $50.00 at TwitterPassion.com.

Twitter Bio: Connecting with Others

The bio feature on your profile gives you the opportunity to introduce yourself to other people on Twitter. Another key thing to remember is it follows you in all the third party applications. Your bio is important not only because of this but because it acts a filter when other people are searching for people with common interests. So get to the point, use a list of keywords that describe yourself, sorta of like a brainstorming session where pick the top ten words to describe yourself.

Note, you can use keywords in an introduction without using just a ‘list’ of words. For example, My bio again, reflects my personality while giving everyone the information they need: “Geek girl, SD to CO - over a decade of online experience, teacher, entrepreneur, designer, open source advocate, co-founder http://www.Distance-Educator.com.”

Directing Twitter Traffic

Build a custom page on your site or blog to introduce yourself, let potential friends or clients know why they should follow you, what you do and offer them a freebie or opportunity to sign up for your newsletter. You are only limited by your imagination, so be creative. This page again should reflect your personality, provide background information about yourself in an easy to read, friendly format. It should not be overly hyped, or use marketing speak. For example, it might be similar to something you’d write introducing your services, background, and expertise to a family friend or to someone who was referred to you from a friend. Because most likely the person knows a bit about you already since they’ve read your bio, your twitter conversation stream, and looked at your customized personal twitter page. So this page takes a step beyond the bits and pieces the person has learned about you from those sources.

Join the Conversation

The most important advice I can give about using Twitter is to be genuine. If you have something to add to a conversation then do it. For example, its similar to sitting in a restaurant and over hearing a conversation in the booth behind you. So if you can add value to the discussion, you politely speak up. You wouldn’t say, “You’re wrong - I can’t believe you still cling to those archaic ideas!” instead you might say, “Great discussion, I’ve read (link) that might shed more light on the topic.” It’s important to add value! Don’t just tweet to see yourself ‘tweet’. :)

Twitter Search and Meme Following

Things to keep in mind when designing a background image for your twitter page. Remember the image is static so you need to make sure the content on the background image shows on all browser and screen sizes.

Look & Feel

Color palette: Pick colors consistent with your brand and/or image you’d like to convey.

Change background colors to match your new background. These colors are supplied with all background themes purchased or downloaded from TwitterPassion.com

Summary

Social networking is the next logical step in the evolution of working, learning, and living online. It is an integral part of people’s lives today, facilitating lines of communication, cutting the sales cycle, and giving businesses an opportunity to connect on a personal level with their customers.

Have fun, be genuine and start following, connecting, and learning. See you online and maybe in person!

August 12th, 2008Weekly Technology Finds

DimDim LogoI’m always looking for web based technology teaching tools to share with my readers. This week I’ve come across a few new tools you might find useful.

The first is a FREE web meeting/conferencing tool, DimDim. DimDim is a simple, free service letting everyone, everywhere communicate using rich media in real time. DimDim is free, doesn’t require any downloads, has an open source API, gives you the ability to share your desktop, participate in audio and video conferencing, present content, chat in public or private, you have access to a whiteboard & annotations, and last but not least you can record and playback your meetings.

The free version gives you the ability to hold meeting with up to 20 people and gives you access to all the features. If you need to go “pro” then you can brand your meeting room and have up to 100 people in a meeting for 100 bucks a year! Then if you have to hold simultaneous meetings then you can upgrade to their “enterprise” version for 2,000/yr that gives you the ability to have 1,000 people in one meeting in addition to holding simultaneous meetings. They have a great service and offer it at a great value — definitely worth a look!

The second is JingProject a project by TechSmith, who makes another handy tool I use called SnagIt. The JingProject gives you the ability to capture and share your stuff at a moment’s notice. Simply select an area of your screen, capture it as an image or record it as a video, and then click share. Jing places a link (URL) to your content that you can paste into any of your conversations. My opinion, it’s a web based version of SnagIt. If you are interested in trying JingProject or SnagIt they offer a free trial version.

The third useful tool I found is AideRSS, an intelligent assistant that can save you some time by analyzing the quality of a blog’s content. I don’t know how much I’ll use it since I don’t normally subscribe to a blog written by someone I don’t know or haven’t reviewed. But if you’re getting started then this could be useful in weeding out the noise.

Finally two more great tech finds include a FREE web based Video Player called FLV Player and a FREE web based tool to play audio on your site called FlamPlayer.

Note you can see both of these tools in action at GavinLeeper.com a portfolio site created with a popular CMS Zikula for a client. Note, the video streaming through the player is Quicktime so it’s better quality than a converted Flash file.

Be sure to check back for more reviews and technology finds! I’m also thinking on testing out DimDim so if you’re interested in joining the web meeting let me know!

We all have either played with a Wii or have heard of all the cool games! Today they even released an exercise ‘package’. They’re even using the Wii at retirement homes for their social activities - you have a built in tennis court, bowling alley so why not! It is a wonderful social group gaming experience.

And beyond the gaming aspect of the Wii I’ve found some cool YouTube videos from Johnny Chung Lee at Carnegie Mellon University showing how to use the infrared (IR) light pens and the Wii Remote to create a very low-cost multi-point interactive whiteboard and multi-point tablet displays.

You can download the software from his site: http://johnnylee.netNote, I haven’t created the whiteboard yet but hopefully will experiment soon, but in the meantime take a look at his video and if you give it a try let me know.

The week has passed but millions of students and educators nationwide examined their carbon footprints during National Environmental Education Week, April 13-19.

National Environmental Education Week (EE Week) launched with over 1600 partner organizations, and millions of teachers, students and others in step. This year, EE Week provides an opportunity for young people to learn about carbon footprints — both how they are created and what can be done to shrink them.

The National Environmental Education Week Web site, http://www.eeweek.org, provides resources including a robust curricula library offering dozens of grade-appropriate, standards-based lessons on energy, carbon and climate change, as well as including a new, easy-to-use nature center map to help teachers and parents find local environmental education activities, and a one-of-a-kind carbon footprint calculator, built by Zerofootprint, that helps students examine how their daily choices affect the health of the climate. This site provides information for everyone — take a look. For details and more information about EE Week, becoming a partner, or participating in a local event, please visit http://www.eeweek.org.

Just found something other geeks might be interested, a free application called Input Director. It is designed for users who have two (or more) computers set up at home and find themselves regularly sliding from one system to the other. With Input Director, you can share a single keyboard/mouse across a set of systems. You switch which system receiving the input either by hotkey or by moving the cursor so it transitions from one screen to the other (in a very similar fashion to a multi-monitor setup). The idea is you can position the monitors from two or more systems in a row and use a shared keyboard/mouse to control all of them.

Its a free application you can check out here: http://www.inputdirector.com/

April 23rd, 2008Transforming Education

While everyone is talking about the education revolution there are a few sites staking their claim in the new movement. These companies are well funded, have brain trusts in their management and have a good opportunity to make a difference in the way we learn in the future!

GlobalScholar.com is a tutoring platform that connects students and parents with trusted (vetted) educators for one to one tutoring in homework or self paced learning. Additionally it offers their platform to schools enabling teachers an assistant in their educational goals.

How much does it cost? Well from my initial review it seems like you can tell them how much you can pay then the instructors (whose credentials have been verified and background checks run) can accept your bid. Hmmm, an innovate idea, putting learning into the market place, sounds like a new paradigm shift is happening without the permission of the establishment.

If you are interested in learning more about teaching for them take a look at their FAQs: http://www.globalscholar.com/Content/EN-US/FAQProvider.aspx

EduFire.com is another company to watch! On their site they have a lofty goal, “Our goal is to create a platform to allow live learning to take place over the Internet anytime from anywhere.” Although they don’t seem to be doing anything new they are providing a centralized marketplace for students to connect with educators. It seems like an educational version of mySpace but something to watch. This is a great opportunity for language teachers, become a tutor and make some extra cash, see their FAQ here: http://edufire.com/why_teach
I’ll keep you posted on anything else I learn.

Hot off the presses a new site launched on Monday connects you, the teacher, to your students. The site says, “TeachStreet.com is new company dedicated to helping students find local teachers”.

I’m happy to see this type of site because I think ‘local’ is in, that is the next new wave of the web. And this site is excellent not only in its mission but in its design! The site is easy to use, they use web 2.0 technologies so you are able to collaborate and communicate online.

It is new so it might take some time for the site to gain traction but it has been getting some great buzz online, so as it grows it will become a great tool to promote your classes. Be sure to take a look around the site and let me know what you think.
